Yawning Man - Discography

"Rising from Palm Springs´ skate-punk scene (for a first-hand account of those days, please read Mario
Lalli´s article The Strange Birth of Desert Rock), Yawning Man is another of those bands whose genre-defining
stylings have remained unsung beyond the sphere of the local. From Germs and Hüsker Dü blokes to researchers
of less urgent kinds of music, Yawning Man quickly attained cult status in the Coachella Valley area, mainly
because of the sprawling jam sessions they used to host in the desert, where electric generators were used to
power “a mix of Grateful Dead and Meat Puppets”, always trying to escape the pressure of weed-finding
authorities. It was through those late-night workouts on trippy dynamics that Yawning Man laid the foundation
for what´d come to be known as Desert (or Stoner) Rock, inspiring many youngsters who attended those seminal
parties (Josh Homme and Brant Bjork among them) to start their own groups. In spite of regional success,
Yawning Man kept a low profile for most of their career, just recording some demos that didn´t see the light
of day until quite recently. After a long stint which had them reincarnating as a freak-jazz combo (The Sort
of Quartet) and also working on several side projects (Fatso Jetson, The Perfect Rat), Yawning Man made a
surprising comeback in 2005, recording both an album (Rock Formations) and an EP (Pot Head). In 2007, those
two were bundled together as Vista Point, a compilation which makes for a terrific introduction to their
idiosyncratic style. Be warned, this is not your typical Stoner Rock chugfest. Albeit it rocks as hard as you
could ask, Yawning Man are much keener on distilling sweeping soundscapes than on just flooring you with power
chords. After two decades of playing together, the balance they achieve between tightness and spaciness is
just remarkable. When noted colleagues such as TheJoeyTaylor say they´re on board for anything Gary Arce plays
on, you better believe him. Informed by surf reverb and inventive pyschedelia, his sun-drenched licks and
shimmering explorations in sustain soar effortlessly above the groovy seats provided by Lalli and Hernández,
bending and curling like a warm gentle breeze. In Pot Head, his playing is edgier and even more expansive,
producing streams of thick sonic lava that I could get lost in all day long. With material as good as this,
it´s about time Yawning Man get the recognition they deserve." - Philip Graves
