This was made by converting the Pono 88kHz/24bit version to DSD256 with Tascam software, then with a hardware DAAD recompressor-prototype; converted and split by 32 band - 1/3rd octave frequencies to 64 analogue mono tracks and fed to 64 auto-balancing opto-compressors, mixed together while converted back to DSD256 using a ESS chip, converted back to PCM with Tascam software to 192kHz/32bit, sampled down to 96kHz in iZotope, and mastered in a popular DAW using a DSD128 rip of the vinyl version as reference to 44.1kHz/24bit, and finally converted to flac using Freac.
The purpose of this unofficial re-mastering was to demonstrate a technique which to add dynamic range without using a de-clipper nor adding unwanted saturation. This v2 version has even better dynamic range than the mp3 (which also had some minor errors due to compressor clipping).
Does the addition of the dynamic range take place within the opto-compressors?
Yes; it's because the signal is converted from electricity to light and back to electricity. Neiter compression or limiting are used.
By amping light, one gets around both the clipping and the impedance problem, but when the 32 bands are mixed together the psychoacoustic loudness curve are emphazed, so it has to be re-EQed to match the source. One thing we've been trying to figure out is to do the EQ-ing before mixing down the bands.
I do not understand the specifics but I do know it requires a lot of detail and effort. This sounded great to me. Thanks for all the hard work.
Thank you!!!
Thanks! It sounds great! :D
Thanks, this sound a LOT better than original release!
