Gas. Ahh, gas. It can be deadly, humorous, beneficial, profitable or just plain odorous. In the case of Tomahawk's new album, Mit Gas (“with gas” in German), all of the above are fitting. Bits of this project hint at soaring artistic genius, while other portions reveal musicians hitting a wall. Perhaps the band did too much as individuals before coming together for this ambitious futuristic project. After all, Tomahawk is composed of former/present members of Faith No More, The Jesus Lizard, Mr. Bungle, The Cows, The Melvins, Helmet and the Fantomas.

At the helm of Tomahawk’s blistering sound are Mike Patton and Duane Denison, co-conspirators with devious intent. Denison is a pro at fleecing the right textures out of his guitars to make the listener’s skin crawl, while Patton leaps impossible vocal hurdles for the same effect. In tandem, the two give a sci-fi haunted-house feel, creating music sure to frighten the pants off anyone not already familiar with the taste of blood.

Tomahawk’s first-rate rhythm section shouldn’t be forgotten, either. Their contribution to songs like “Mayday” and “Rotgut” are incalculable, adding bludgeoning crunch and inordinate power. John Stanier brings the jazzy time signatures he mastered in Helmet to good use here, bouncing them back and forth between Kevin Rutmanis’ demented bass lines. Although Patton may belch and howl like the devil, it’s Stanier and Rutmanis that give Tomahawk their sinister edge.

Regardless of how much is right with Mit Gas, plenty of it sounds stale and rehashed. “Rape The Day,” for example, sounds leftover from Faith No More’s King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime sessions. Ditto for the slumbering “Desastre Natural,” where Patton gets suave with a little Portuguese. Tomahawk may do a few things perfectly (for starters, listen to Patton’s blood-curdling shriek in the break-down of “When The Stars Begin To Fall”), but they aren’t nailing everything.

Oddfellows is the fourth studio album by musical supergroup Tomahawk. The album is the first to feature new bass player Trevor Dunn, who has replaced previous member Kevin Rutmanis. Oddfellows was recorded live in the Easy Eye Sound Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, after a brief period of rehearsal. Guitarist Duane Denison favored the location as its cheaper studio costs allowed for longer periods of song-writing.
The album was released on January 29, 2013 through the record label Ipecac Recordings. The release of Oddfellows was preceded by a single, "Stone Letter", first released on November 23, 2012 as part of Record Store Day's "Black Friday" event. Reviews for Oddfellows have been positive, and Dunn's presence has been seen by critics as a positive addition. The album reached chart positions in several countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium and the United States.
